A kitchen remodel fails most often not because of bad materials or sloppy craftsmanship, but because tasks happened in the wrong order. Cabinets get installed before flooring is level. Backsplash tile goes up before the electrician confirms outlet height. Countertops get templated before the sink arrives and turns out to be the wrong size. Each of these mistakes costs real money to fix, sometimes triple what it would have cost to do right the first time. The sequence below reflects how experienced project managers actually schedule kitchen work, and why each step depends on the one before it.
Demolition and Structural Assessment First
Before anything else, the space needs to be stripped down to studs and subfloor if the scope includes moving walls, plumbing, or gas lines. This is also when hidden problems surface: water damage under old flooring, undersized electrical panels, rot behind a dishwasher, or a load-bearing wall nobody accounted for. Finding these issues at week one costs a few days of delay. Finding them at week six, after cabinets are ordered to a specific layout, costs weeks and thousands of dollars in change orders.
A licensed contractor or structural engineer should inspect any wall removal before demo finishes. If a wall turns out to be load-bearing, the beam and post sizing needs to be finalized before framing moves forward, not decided on the fly.
Rough-In Work: Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC
Once the space is open, this is the only window to move or add plumbing lines, run new electrical circuits, and adjust ductwork. Common kitchen electrical needs include:
- Dedicated 20-amp circuits for the refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher
- A 50-amp circuit if adding a new electric range or cooktop
- Under-cabinet lighting wiring, run before drywall goes up
- Outlet placement coordinated with the final cabinet and countertop layout, not guessed
This is also the stage to relocate a sink or island plumbing, add a gas line for a range, or install a pot filler. Every one of these decisions has to be locked in before drywall closes the walls. Cutting into finished drywall to add a line that was forgotten means redoing texture, paint, and sometimes tile.
Inspections typically happen here too. Most municipalities require a rough-in inspection before walls can be closed. Skipping this step, or rushing past it, risks a failed final inspection later that forces walls to be reopened.
Drywall, Paint, and Flooring Before Cabinets
Once rough-in passes inspection, insulation goes in (if exterior walls are exposed), then drywall, then a coat of primer and at least the first coat of paint. Painting before cabinet install matters because it is far easier to roll paint on an open wall than to cut in around installed cabinets, and touch-up paint rarely matches perfectly years later.
Flooring comes next, and this is where sequencing gets debated. For most flooring types (hardwood, tile, LVP), it makes sense to install flooring before cabinets so the floor runs continuously and any future cabinet changes don’t leave a visible gap. The exception is very thick tile or stone flooring in a small kitchen, where some contractors prefer to install cabinets first and butt flooring up to the cabinet base to save material cost. Either approach works, but it needs to be decided before ordering materials, not mid-project.
A second coat of paint or touch-up typically happens after cabinet install, once the risk of scuffing walls during heavy lifting has passed.
Cabinet Installation and Countertop Templating
Cabinets go in after floors are down and walls are painted. Installers use a laser level to check the floor for variance; most codes and manufacturers allow no more than 1/8 inch of deviation across a cabinet run before shimming becomes necessary. Base cabinets go in first, leveled and secured to wall studs, then upper cabinets, which should be hung before base cabinets in some workflows to avoid ladder clearance issues, though most residential installers do base first for stability.
Countertop templating happens only after cabinets are fully installed and secured. Templaters use digital scanning or physical templates to capture exact dimensions, including sink cutouts and cooktop openings. This is why sink and cooktop selection has to happen before templating, not after. Ordering a countertop before cabinets are set, or before the sink is on site, is one of the most common causes of remake fees in kitchen remodels. A custom stone countertop typically takes 10 to 21 days to fabricate after templating, so this step also affects the overall project timeline.
Backsplash, Fixtures, and Final Trim
Backsplash tile goes in after countertops are installed, not before. Countertop edges need to be in place so tile can be measured and cut to meet them cleanly, with a consistent grout line. Installing backsplash first often results in a visible gap or an uneven line where the counter doesn’t sit flush.
Once backsplash is grouted and sealed, plumbing fixtures go in: faucet, garbage disposal, dishwasher connection, and any pot filler. Electrical fixtures follow: under-cabinet lighting connections, pendant lights over an island, and outlet and switch covers. Appliances get set into their final positions last, after cabinets, counters, and flooring are complete, to avoid scratching stainless steel or chipping stone during other trades’ work.
Final walkthroughs should include testing every outlet, running the dishwasher through a cycle, checking that cabinet doors and drawers close without rubbing, and confirming caulk lines at the backsplash and countertop edges are clean and consistent.
Where Most Redos Actually Happen
The most expensive mistakes in kitchen remodels come from ordering materials before measurements are finalized. Cabinets ordered before an accurate floor plan is confirmed. Countertops ordered before appliances are selected. Tile ordered before the backsplash height is decided against the cabinet layout. Anyone managing a remodel, whether a homeowner acting as their own general contractor or a first-time project coordinator, should treat the rough-in and cabinet installation stages as hard checkpoints. Nothing gets ordered for the next phase until the current phase is inspected, measured, and confirmed on site.
Before starting demolition, write out a sequence with target dates for each phase and identify which decisions (sink model, range type, cabinet layout) need to be locked in before which trade shows up. Share that sequence with every contractor involved so plumbers, electricians, and cabinet installers are working from the same timeline rather than coordinating around each other on the fly.
